Spend More Time On The Mountain with better service for mobile devices

The Challenge

My primary objective when taking on this work was to remediate sitewide accessibility concerns to align them with WCAG 2.1 standards.

This client wanted to ensure that their website and ordering process worked flawlessly for all customers, whether booking rentals on a mountainside or browsing from home. However, the forms lacked semantic structure, while major contrast issues impacted readability. To add complexity to the mix, navigation wasn’t even accessible to keyboard or screen reader users. Improving these aspects would help streamline the gear delivery process and improve the experience for all customers.

My Solution

I applied accessibility best practices and responsive design techniques to ensure the site works smoothly on any device or input method:

  • Semantic HTML Forms: Reworked form markup for better structure and accessibility, including proper labels and field grouping.
  • ARIA & Alt Attributes: Added descriptive roles and alt text to help assistive technologies interpret content correctly.
  • Focus Management: Improved keyboard focus behavior, making navigation easier for users who rely on non-mouse input.
  • Responsive Enhancements: Optimized layout and UI elements to perform reliably on phones, tablets, and desktops.
  • Contrast Adjustments: Audited and consulted on contrast levels to improve visual clarity and meet WCAG guidelines.

Results & Impact

  • Faster Booking: A more intuitive, accessible interface reduces booking friction for users across all platforms.
  • Accessibility Compliance: Forms, buttons, and content now support screen readers and keyboard-only navigation.
  • Improved Visual Clarity: Increased contrast and better layout spacing enhance the reading and interaction experience.
  • Device Agnostic: Whether mobile or desktop, the site is now easier to use and navigate, making the entire experience of using the application more intuitive.

Key Takeaways

  • Accessibility features—or lack thereof—directly impact user satisfaction and conversions.
  • Well-structured, semantic markup improves usability, which directly translates into more sales and repeat customers.
  • Responsive design is about more than layout: it asks us as developers to strive to ensure that interactions make sense across every single page and at any screen size.
  • Prioritizing accessibility early in a project leads to better, more inclusive outcomes and wider market reach.
  • Web applications become stronger and more reliable when they are designed to serve a broader range of users.
