Making the Path to the Powder More Inclusive

The Challenge

Base Mountain Sports needed their website to work better for all users—including those using assistive technologies or browsing on smaller screens. While the visual design was strong, it lacked semantic structure and accessibility best practices. Additionally, the mobile experience felt clunky, with a few elements breaking or shifting unexpectedly across devices or on different browsers.

My Solution

I conducted a thorough audit and implemented structural and semantic improvements site-wide:

  • Used semantic HTML5 elements for better content hierarchy and accessibility
  • Added ARIA roles, labels, and alt text to improve screen reader support
  • Enhanced keyboard navigation and focus events
  • Consulted on color contrast and typography for WCAG alignment
  • Improved breakpoints and responsive behaviors for smoother mobile UX
  • Ensured forms were accessible, properly labeled, and keyboard-navigable

Results & Impact

The updated site became significantly more accessible to users relying on screen readers and alternative input methods. Navigation was smoother, forms were easier to complete, and overall mobile responsiveness was improved across devices. Client feedback reflected increased confidence in the site’s usability and readiness for a broader, more inclusive audience.

Key Takeaways

  • Semantic markup makes content more understandable—for both users and search engines
  • Accessibility and responsive design go hand-in-hand
  • ARIA and labels play a crucial role in screen reader usability
  • Even small changes (like alt text and focus styling) can have a huge impact
